Kibbe Theatrical Romantic Style Analysis- Selena Gomez

What is Selena Gomez's Kibbe Body Type?

I have determined her to be a Romantic. Perhaps a Theatrical Romantic, but certainly in that family.

Update: Since I first wrote this post, David Kibbe has typed Selene Gomez as a Theatrical Romantic! I called it- whoop whoop! I'm keeping the post the same, but since we know the answer I got is correct, this post is more about the process I went through to get there. Enjoy.

This post is a detailed account of how I got to this conclusion. I'll be focusing on the lines of her body and clothes as well as her essence.

The basis of this analysis is primarily the Kibbe system of body typing, and secondarily the Kitchener system for understanding Essence. These systems are unique and independent, but I like to use them together. Please keep in mind that I'm no expert and these are just my thoughts. They could very well be wrong. Anyway, let's begin.

Let's take a look at the lines of Selena's body:

Kibbe Theatrical Romantic Style Analysis- Selena Gomez: body lines

I see short lines, soft flesh, and a rounded bone structure. Selena looks delicate and small. While she is fleshy, this is true regardless of her weight, she does not have a broadness in the chest- her shoulders are quite small. Selena is more curve dominant (than frame dominant).

Elongation/ Vertical Line

The vertical line is observed in the silhouette between the shoulders and knees and has to do with how fabric falls on the body.

Kibbe Theatrical Romantic Style Analysis- Selena Gomez: vertical line

Selena has a short vertical line. However, she is suited by and can pull off all the lengths of the looks above. I thought the longer lengths would drown her, but they don't.

Natural Lines

Athleisure

Kibbe Theatrical Romantic Style Analysis- Selena Gomez: athleisure

These are not great looks for Selena. These tracksuits are too casual for her and look very underwhelming. The first look (left), is the worst. The oversized sweater swallows her up and the pants are just there. I think the shoes, socks and general styling is what really kills this look. It doesn't have enough glamour for her and it looks frumpy as a result.

The other two looks (middle, right) are much better and even stylish on her. This is not because of the tracksuits themselves, but rather the styling. Her hair and makeup are done, the bag and shoes are glamorous and she looks casual in a way that's still beautiful on her.

Denim

Kibbe Theatrical Romantic Style Analysis- Selena Gomez: denim

The first look (left) is great on Selena. She looks casual on account of the oversized T-shirt and jeans combo, but the styling is very feminine and elevated such that she looks very put together. Being 'put together' is very important for Selena. If she was wearing flip-flops or sneakers, for example, this look would suffer.

The middle look is very Gamine: the high neckline, the cropped jeans; the loafers; and the cropped, boxy jacket. The mid-size, angular bag also works with these lines.

The last look (right) is very Flamboyant Natural because of the oversized blazer and baggy, straight-leg jeans. This is her least flattering look. It swallows her up and she looks very small in it.

Kibbe Theatrical Romantic Style Analysis- Selena Gomez: denim

Selena looks beautiful in both these looks. The jeans are quite loose and casual, and arguably so are the sweaters. However, in each case her stylish is very glam; the statement earrings, the boots, the bag, and of course the hair and makeup. This sensual and glamorous essence is what stands out in these looks and it captures her so well that she looks stunning in both.

Gamine Lines

Kibbe Theatrical Romantic Style Analysis- Selena Gomez: gamine lines

Selena has grown up on television and in the public eye, so a lot of her outfits when she was much younger were naturally Gamine-ish, and she looked very cute in them. She looks adorable in the first look (left).

However, as she's grown up and matured, Gamine lines are too childish on her and it's become clear that she doesn't have a Gamine essence.

In the middle look, the graphic t-shirt looks okay but rather separate from her. Even in the last look (right), the pocket detail of the jeans looks a bit too busy and childish on her, even though she is clearly quite young in the photo.

Coat Length Study

Kibbe Theatrical Romantic Style Analysis- Selena Gomez: coats

All of these lengths look great on Selena, from short-midi (left) to almost floor-length (middle). The length by itself doesn't swallow her up. The midi length is the least flattering (right).

She is more affected by fabric weight, which is why of these three, the last image (right) is arguably the least flattering because of how visually heavy and textured it is. She is better suited by smooth, light fabrics.

Flamboyant Natural Staple- Oversized + Long + (visually) Heavy Coat

Kibbe Theatrical Romantic Style Analysis- Selena Gomez: oversized coats

These coats are much too long and heavy for Selena. Her bone structure is too delicate to handle this much visual weight. In both cases, she looks frumpy and inelegant. I also get the sense that she's struggling to keep these coats on her because they are so heavy.

Flamboyant Natural Staple- Oversized + Textured (visually heavy) at any length

Kibbe Theatrical Romantic Style Analysis- Selena Gomez: oversized coats

Again, these fuzzy, textured styles do not suit Selena and they are very separate from her. They lack the delicacy and smoothness that she needs. These jackets look almost cartoonish on her.

The tomboyish combat boots and pants (left, middle) are similarly not harmonious with her. She very much needs to dress like a lady (polished, feminine) to look her best.

Flamboyant Natural Staple- Oversized Blazer

Kibbe Theatrical Romantic Style Analysis- Selena Gomez: blazer

This is very interesting. I think these three suits represent three body type styles, and they suit her to very varying degrees.

The first image (left) is the least flattering on Selena. The cut is narrow, the tank top underneath is very casual and odd and the jacket fit is rather boxy on her. The color especially washes her out, and the monotone and simple nature of the entire ensemble is too boring for her. She needs sophisticated detailing.

The second look (middle), is much better than the first. The fabric looks smoother and more refined, and the traditional cut of the blazer is more flattering on her. However, this is still not her best. The jacket is oversized which is not the best for her and the pants are cropped. The two-tone nature of the shoes (with this look) takes some sophistication away from the entire look. I also want to brush and smooth out her hair.

The last look (right), is the best. She looks stunning. The suit is fitted to her body, showing off her curves and cleavage- which looks beautiful and natural on her. The detailing of this outfit is perfect. The earrings, shoes, buttons, and shoulder tassels add glamour and polished bling. Her hair and makeup are subtle but polished.

Dramatic Lines

Kibbe Theatrical Romantic Style Analysis- Selena Gomez

These are quite Dramatic lines, but they are somewhat close. Specifically, I wanted to explore how Selena looks in a head-to-toe monochrome ensemble with some crisp tailoring. This is the best I could find.

I think she looks a bit stiff in the first (left) outfit, the fabric is too stiff for her and doesn't allow for any natural movement. I also think this color pattern is not the best for her. However, the open neckline helps her out and lets this look 'breathe' just a bit. If she took just a headshot in this outfit, it would look great, but a full look is too much.

I love the color of the second look (middle) on her, but again the fabric, while softer than the first look, is still a bit too stiff for her. The cutouts are okay, and I find the choker and her neckline in general, to be restrictive.

The third look (right), is the best. She looks beautiful and sophisticated. She does look a bit boring, but in a mature way. The fabric is weighted but soft and allows for movement. The neckline is high but gently open. The overall fit is loosely tailored (and not strictly so) which is best for Selena. The hair, bag, and shoes act as contrasting and polished accessories.

Dramatic Lines + Essence vs. Dramatic Lines + Romantic Essence

Kibbe Theatrical Romantic Style Analysis- Selena Gomez

The first look (left) is so awkward on Selena. The leather suit is too stiff and harsh on her. The fabric, being stiff, doesn't conform to her body and the fit is loose, boxy, and oversized. That she is in all black is also not great for her, she almost fades into the background behind her outfit. The hair is messy and the shoes are blunt and boyish, adding to the overall lack of sophistication and disharmony of this look.

The second look (middle) is less awkward than the first, but still not her best. Again, it's the stiff leather skirt that throws it off. This proves just how important fabric selection is for Selena. Everything else is quite harmonious; the top gently hugs her body and makes allowance for her chest. Her shoes are polished. I do wish her hair wasn't so dark or that it was pulled back, but she looks good.

The third look (right) is amazing. This is how Selena pulls off 'sexy and edgy'. The pants are leather but they are fitted to her body. The cut-out detail provides playful peeks of skin that are sexy but subtle. The top likewise highlights her cleavage and is very sexy, but feels playful. The studded detail in the shoes adds edginess and the gold belt pulls it all together (and also cinches her waist). Her light, blonde hair (with natural dark roots) is perfect to brighten and finish this look. Her makeup is subtle and beautiful.

Romantic Lines

Kibbe Theatrical Romantic Style Analysis- Selena Gomez

This is another study in fit and fabric selection for Selena. In the first look (left), she looks beautiful, but it is not her best, especially compared to the other two looks. Her black leather dress does get some things right; it's fitted up top, detailed, and cinched at the waist. However, the leather is too heavy for her and in general, the look is stiff and hard on her. Her styling is beautiful.

The two looks to the right are Selena at her best. She looks amazing in these body-hugging gowns in luxe fabrics and delicate detailing. It doesn't matter if her neckline is high and closed (middle) or open (right), she looks equally beautiful. I think what matters more for her is glamorous styling and detailing. So in the first look, the glittery cut-out detail creates this glamour and, in the second look, this is achieved by her luxurious jewelry.

Kibbe Theatrical Romantic Style Analysis- Selena Gomez

Again, Selena looks amazing in these looks, but to varying degrees.

The first look (left) is the best. While it has visual (and probably real) weight, it is fitted, luxurious, and glamorous- all of which are more important for Selena. The silver bling detailing takes this dress to another level.

The second look (middle) is the least flattering on Selena. The dress is beautifully fitted and the shape is beautiful, however, the fabric is terrible for her. On her, this fabric looks cheap.

The third look (right), is okay. I love the top- the cut and fit around the bodice are gorgeous and the diamond ring detail is perfect. I like that it opens into a cape but I wish it was a short one that ended at her under-breast line. This would highlight her cinched waist and work so much better for her. I also wish there was no front slit and that the bottom was more fitted to her body.

I think the cape is too much fabric for Selena and the front slit causes the dress to open and flare out more than it needs to.

Ingénue Essence

Kibbe Theatrical Romantic Style Analysis- Selena Gomez: Ingenue essence

Selena definitely has an Ingénue essence and it shows up most notably on her face. Regardless of her age, she continues to look like a fresh-faced teenager. She looks at home and is so beautiful in these girlish hairstyles.

However, her body does not have an Ingénue Essence:

Kibbe Theatrical Romantic Style Analysis- Selena Gomez

These outfits are not flattering on Selena. The fabrics (tulle, diamante) and cuts of these dresses make them very 'little girl' in essence and they all look very separate from Selena. They are not sophisticated and mature enough for her.

Mature Ingénue

Kibbe Theatrical Romantic Style Analysis- Selena Gomez

These looks are beautiful on Selena. The cuts and lengths of the first two dresses (left, middle) are very Ingenue in essence. The bright orange colors also add to this effect. However, the fabrics and styling of both looks are sexy and mature- particularly in the first image. This balances the Ingenue aspects and creates an overall harmonious ensemble.

While still beautiful, the middle look is the least flattering on Selena. It is decidedly the most girlish on account of the lower hemline and the fun earrings and nails. Still, it pulls together and she looks good.

The third look (right), is the most mature in styling, fabric, and cut- but the detailing on the fabric gives it a touch of girlish playfulness and this is beautiful on Selena.

Gamine Lines

Kibbe Theatrical Romantic Style Analysis- Selena Gomez

This is how Selena pulls off Gamine lines. These looks lean Gamine because of the high necklines, sharp and small geometry, graphic elements, and color blocks. However, and very importantly for her, each of these looks is grounded in mature styling (shoes, bag) and sultry hair and makeup. That stops them from looking childish and instead they look fun.

Kibbe Theatrical Romantic Style Analysis- Selena Gomez

The first two looks (left, middle) are stiff and geometric and separate from Selena. The square top (left), and square edges (left, middle) are not the best for her curved silhouette.

The middle look is the least flattering. The white color is too harsh on her and the chopped-up nature of the ensemble (as a pose to a dress in one piece) is not the best for her. The belt detail is odd. The diamond necklace and red lips are Romantic elements that would ordinarily elevate her look, but here they look stark against the white outfit. This look is very disjointed.

The best of these is the third (right) look, I think due to the sultry nature of the slinky fabric. As compared to the other two looks, here she looks mature and sexy- which is more harmonious for her.

Worst Silhouettes

These are silhouettes that flatter Selena the least. In general, she is least flatted by unconstructed silhouettes that deviate from her body. Sharp geometric cuts, too-girlish styles, and fabrics that are too lightweight or too stiff also don't flatter her.

Kibbe Theatrical Romantic Style Analysis- Selena Gomez

The first look (left) is too-girlish and the fabric is too frilly and lightweight for Selena.

The big flare skirts (middle, right) lose her body. The stiff and heavy fabric of the top in the middle image is too harsh and looks matronly on her.

Shapeless / Unconstructed

Kibbe Theatrical Romantic Style Analysis- Selena Gomez

Selena is lost in shapeless dresses.

In the middle look, the loose black dress robs her of her sensuality, which is fine because I think the goal was to create a 'cute' look, which is also aided by the short length. But imagine if this dress was long and shapeless, it would not flatter her at all.

In the first image (left), the dress has too much fabric and she drowns in it. The crinkly nature of the fabric also takes away her elegance and sensuality. Add to that the lack of styling and she just looks...bad. This dress is better suited to a Natural and preferably a Flamboyant Natural type.

Not Quite Right

Kibbe Theatrical Romantic Style Analysis- Selena Gomez

Each of these looks is missing something. Let's discuss:

The first look (left) is great in terms of styling. I like the length of the dress and the way it drapes around her bodice. I feel like it could have been more fitted around her lower body but it's okay. The feather shoulder detail is very distracting and is a diversion I don't think she needs. Still, it is overall cute on her.

The middle look is the least flattering. Again, this stark white color does nothing for her and the sharp cuts of this stiff fabric are also harsh against her delicate bone structure and soft flesh. She looks like she's in a dress prison.

The third look (right) is beautiful. It leans heavily on the sensual essence, with the satin fabric, high slit, and cascading locks, which Selena can handle. However, there isn't enough body conforming. This dress is too unconstructed for her and would be better suited to a Soft Natural type.

Best Silhouettes

Body-hugging silhouettes, polished styling, and glamorous details.

Kibbe Theatrical Romantic Style Analysis- Selena Gomez

Selena looks her best in subtle or extreme draping, anything that holds and conforms to her body. She needs glamorous detailing- a pair of earrings, a polished shoe or a sexy sandal- the more feminine the better. Medium to medium-heavy weight fabrics in luxurious finishes are her best. Lengths don't matter too much, as long as shape and glamor are maintained.

The first look is a lesson in casual done right for Selena. The dress itself is in a simple fabric, but it is elevated by clean tailoring and construction. It looks like it was made well. The white sneakers make this a casual look, but her very elegant bag balances them out. Lastly, her makeup is polished and glamorous and she looks beautiful.

The middle look is simple and elegant. The bold lip and strappy sandals are the perfect complement to the body-hugging midi.

The third look (right) is another well-executed casual look for her. The sweater is loose and oversized and the fabric is very textured. However, her body is clearly defined underneath it by the jeans and t-shirt/ bodysuit whose fabrics are smooth. Thus the look is balanced and beautiful. The earrings are glam and her boot is polished.

Why Selena Gomez is NOT a Kibbe Soft Natural

There has been speculation and discussion around Selene's Kibbe type on various discussion boards on the internet, and one type that comes up for her a lot is Soft Natural. I have proven to myself that she is definitely not that (or a Natural of any kind), and I'd like to discuss why:

Kibbe Theatrical Romantic Style Analysis- Selena Gomez

Of these three outfits, I think Selena looks her best in the third (right), followed by the first (left) and she is least flattered by the middle look. A Soft Natural would be most flattered by either of the drapey looks (left, middle) and least flattered by the more fitted red gown.

In the middle image, Selena's body is lost in the silver slip dress and she loses some sophistication and sensuality. In the first look (left), she looks elegant and beautiful, and much more harmonious than the first look because the dress under her cape is fitted to her body, albeit gently so.

The third look (right) is simply stunning. The dress is fitted to her body and it looks amazing on her. The long length makes it more glamorous, as do the earrings. The reddish color plays into the sensual essence that works so well for her.

Simply, Selena looks better the more body-hugging her clothes get and the more glammed up her styling gets. This is the opposite of a Natural type.

Essence- Hair

Selena Gomez: best hairstyles

Selena can pull off a lot when it comes to hair, just as long as it is glamorous and overall soft and luscious. Volume and curls are great on her, but they are best when they keep their shape to create a 'gently run through' look as opposed to the 'tousled' look of Naturals.

This is demonstrated in the bob images in the bottom row think. I think she looks better in the first image (left) where her curls are 'cleaner' as compared to the middle where the hair is more tousled.

It may be hard to see because she is so beautiful in every one of these images, but compare the long lengths of the bottom-right image to the top-center image. Imagine she is wearing a satin evening gown, which hair would suit her best?

For me, the answer is clearly top-center. The polished hair with the gentle curl would be more harmonious with a glamorous look (which is more harmonious with her). The tousled hair would take away from the polished finish.

Selena Gomez: worst hairstyles

Selena is not suited by 'undone' hair styling or styling that is extreme in any way, it comes off as harsh and drastic on her.

The wet hair look (top-left) is too unsophisticated for her. It doesn't come off as 'sexy', it looks like she didn't have time to do her hair.

The bone-straight long hair with the blunt bangs is too sleek and dramatic on her. The bleach-blonde bob is also too drastic on her and it robs her of her essence. The short bob (bottom-right) is very cute, but in general, the length is too short for her. She looks her best in hair that is lush and inviting, which for her means length.

Essence- Makeup

Selena Gomez: best makeup

Selena looks her best in glamorous makeup. This can include a bold cat-eye with a shimmery lid and a bold or nude lip, or it cannot. As long as the overall effect is glamorous, she can play around to her heart's content. The looks above demonstrate this.

Selena Gomez: worst makeup

Similar to her hair, Selena is not flattered by makeup that is too dramatic and severe- it comes off as harsh and drastic on her. She also isn't flattered by 'barely there' makeup, it looks incomplete on her.

The top-left look is too dark and overpowering (especially the eyes) for her that it looks gothic- it looks like she's going to a Halloween party.

Balance is important for Selena. The top-center and top-right looks are not necessarily too overpowering, they are just unbalanced. The eye makeup is too dramatic for a nude lip such that her eyes are all I see and they overpower the rest of her face.

The middle look is just odd on her. Her makeup washes her out and her lip color is too light which makes it worse. Her hairstyling also doesn't help and everything combines to create an unflattering look.

In the bottom-right image, her makeup is done well, but she looks boring because the 'no makeup' look that simply doesn't work for her. The shades in the bottom-left image (eyes, lips) are too light for her. She needs bolder and more exact makeup.

Best Looks:

Selena looks so beautiful here. I love her lip color in the first image (left) and that sharp cat-eye. Her hair is bone-straight, but it falls gently behind her and you can tell it has movement.

The dress is gorgeous; sexy straps, rouching; it follows her body. I love the rings and earrings and her hair and makeup are beautiful.

I love this look. The bright color, the satin fabric, and the way it's fitted to her body. Her hair and makeup are beautiful and the diamond necklace brings all the glamour. So beautiful.

I love this look. Yes, this dramatic A-line silhouette is not the greatest for her, but this completely works. I think she did everything correctly so this is a fun risk that pays off.

The color is a big thing here, this color is gorgeous on Selena and is a way to tie back to the sensual Romantic essence that is so important for her, especially since the cut (bottom flare) of the dress takes it away. The diamond earrings and ring bring glamour and her makeup is subtle but beautiful.

I love this look very much. It's giving subtle regal energy. The luxurious velvet fabric, the diamond necklace and earrings, and the statement ring all create an essence of sophisticated glamour. On her, this is almost understated, it's so elegant. I love that little under-boob sliver of flesh detail. Hair and makeup are perfect.

Conclusion

If I had to type Selena, I would say she is a Romantic. Perhaps a Theatrical Romantic, but certainly in that family.

Update: Since I first wrote this post, David Kibbe has typed Selene Gomez as a Theatrical Romantic! I called it- whoop whoop! I'm probably more excited about this than I should be, but it's really nice to get positive feedback (that's how I'm treating it) on my process. I'm getting pretty good at identifying lines and essences- yay!

I'd love to know what you think. Please let me know if you came to the same conclusion or if you'd type Selena differently. If you'd like to Find Your Kibbe Type, you can take the test here.

Dressy Boots For The Kibbe Body Types

Knowing your lines can help you buy better the first time so you don't accumulate clothes and accessories that you don't use. This post is a buying guide for dressy boots for each of the five main Kibbe body types, with respect to their lines and essence, as recommended by David Kibbe himself.

You can Find Your Kibbe Type by taking the test here.

Dramatics

The Dramatic Kibbe body type is characterized by long, lean lines, and sharp edges. This gives an elongated, masculine, and powerful appearance. Similarly, Dramatic clothing lines are long and sharp and fabrics are stiff, creating an altogether sleek, sculpted, and elongated look. The Dramatic essence is powerful.

Dramatics should be very careful of shoe shape. Sharp and sleek, not bulky and squarish.

Boots for Kibbe Dramatic

Let's see this at play on Hailey, who has a lot of Dramatic in her, particularly in her legs, so her shoes need to be sharp and sleek otherwise she looks unharmonious. In all these outfits, the shoes are off, or just not her best.

The shoes in the first and last looks (left, right) are too bulky and square. The heels are too dense and in both cases, they throw off the entire outfit and stand out. They look very separate from Hailey.

The middle look is the best because other elements work to balance out the bulky shoe (and textured bag), but it's still not her best look.

Boots for Kibbe Dramatic

Hailey looks so much better in these sharp-toe shoes. These outfits are more harmonious and complete, I perceive them all together (the shoes aren't separate) and she looks cool, sexy, and sophisticated.

Dramatics

Natural

The Natural body type is defined by soft yang and is the overall combination of a slightly broad and angular structure, with a defined musculature. Natural clothing lines are long but wide, and with blunt edges (not sharp). The Natural silhouette is relaxed, straight, and unconstructed. The fabrics are textured and heavy. The Natural essence is free, easy-going, and fresh.

Yang Height Dominant Types- Be Careful To Maintain Vertical

For Dramatics and Naturals, it matters where their boots cut them. They need to make sure that their boots maintain their long vertical line. Let's consider an example:

Dressy Boots For The Kibbe Body Types

Left:

I think this is the least flattering look. The boots are too long and slouchy, and their length cuts her vertical line into three (almost equal) parts and makes her look shorter.

Middle, Right:

Hailey looks great in both these looks. In the middle image, the ankle boots are so short that her jeans maintain her long vertical line. In the last image (right), the over-the-knee boots are so long that they (and her black top) create and maintain her long vertical line.

Classic

The Kibbe Classic body type is defined by a perfect (blended) balance between yin and yang and the overall look created is tailored, smooth, and symmetrical with even edges- not a hair out of place. Classic clothing lines are soft, straight lines or smoothly curved lines. The fabrics are high-quality, timeless, and traditional. The Classic essence is timeless, reserved, sophisticated, and polished.

Boots for Kibbe Classic

2; here

Yin Height Dominant Types- Be Careful Of Vertical

Romantics and Gamines have a short vertical line, so they must be mindful of this when choosing boot length. Boots that are too long will swallow them up. Let's consider an example:

Dressy Boots For The Kibbe Body Types

Beyonce looks amazing on the left. The short ankle boots are harmonious with her limbs and she looks proportionate.

In the middle, she looks good, but her legs do look shorter because of where her socks cut her off just under the knee.

In the last image (right), the long vertical of the boot swallows up her legs and she looks smaller than she is. She pulls it off (in part because of her strong Diva essence), but purely from a clothing line's point-of-view, this length overpowers her.

Romantic

The Romantic Kibbe body type is defined by lush yin and characterized by roundness and curves. The overall shape of their clothing should be round and soft and should emphasize their full hourglass figure. Fabrics are luxurious and details are feminine (ruffles, lace, rouching). The Romantic essence is magnetic, sensual, and luxurious.

Boots for Kibbe Romantic

2; here

Gamine

The Gamine body type is defined by an even yet seemingly random combination of yin and yang opposites. This creates an overall very youthful and energetic appearance. Gamine clothing lines are short and sharp and are always striving for a staccato effect. Silhouettes should be fitted and compact. Graphic elements and color usage that adds to their fun vibe are ideal. The Gamine essence is energetic, youthful, and mischievous.

Boots for Kibbe Gamine

Gamine

Visual Interest > Respecting Vertical

Gamines can break more fashion rules than any other type because their fun, youthful essence allows (and calls) for it. It's more important for Gamines to have fun, bold details and styling than it is for them to respect their short vertical line recommendations. Let's look at an example:

Boots for Kibbe Gamine

Tessa Thompson is definitely a Gamine, so you would think that her best boots would be shorter and chunkier. Naturally, she looks amazing in the middle- these short, chunky platforms look so natural on her, however, I don't think this is her best look.

I think the last look (right) where she's wearing white over-the-knee boots is her best because of all the detail and 'extraness'. Over-the-knee should be a 'no-no' for short Gamine types, but she looks amazing here because every other element is so perfect. She looks cool and edgy and I don't get the sense that the boots are swallowing her up.

The first image (left) is the worst because of how boring it is. Monochrome is the worst for Gamines, they need Staccato and fun details. In this long, unbroken vertical line (created by the white boots and white dress), she does look dragged down and sooo boring.

Conclusion

This guide is to help sharpen your eye for what you need to look for when buying boots by asking some simple questions. Are you better suited to smooth or textured fabric? Short booties or longer lengths? Sharp toe, rounded or even squared? Sleek or bulky? Neutral tones or colorful styles?

The answers to these questions are different for each of the Kibbe body types, and knowing them for yourself will help you buy better each time, and avoid the styles that don't work for your lines and essence (i.e. the items you buy that sit at the back of your closet).

Zendaya Kibbe Body Type + Style Analysis

What is Zendaya's Kibbe Body Type?

I have determined her to be a Soft Dramatic.

You can Find Your Kibbe Type by taking the test here.

Let's take a look at the lines of Zendaya's body:

Zendaya Kibbe Body Type + Style Analysis

Zendaya’s body is long and lean. I see broad shoulders, long limbs, and taught flesh. I see both sharpness and softness. Sharpness in her structure and some features, and some softness in her flesh. She has a defined waist, and while her frame is prominent, so is her curve.

Elongation/ Vertical Line

The vertical line is observed in the silhouette between the shoulders and knees and has to do with how fabric falls on the body.

Zendaya Kibbe Body Type + Style Analysis

Zendaya has a long vertical line. She looks (and is) very tall. She looks great in all these looks, but I think the very short (left) and very long (right) dresses complement her best. The midi length dress (middle) also looks good, but the extremes just look better.

Awkward Length

Zendaya Kibbe Body Type + Style Analysis

Here, I think she looks slightly awkward in these ‘not too short, not too long’ dress lengths.

Flamboyant Natural Lines

Athleisure

Zendaya Kibbe Body Type + Style Analysis

Zendaya looks very drab in the cozy sweats outfits to the left. In the first image (left), she looks like a random college girl after pulling an all-nighter and not like ZENDAYA. These looks are too plain and underwhelming for her.

She looks the best in the last look (right). Here, her tracksuit is upscaled by the heels, coat, hair, and makeup. That all those things are present makes it okay for her to be in such a relaxed outfit. If you remove these things and leave her in the red tracksuit, this would again be a very blah outfit on her.

Denim

Zendaya Kibbe Body Type + Style Analysis

The two outfits to the left are too relaxed for Zendaya. They take away from her beauty and elegance. The ripped jeans, t-shirt/ sweats look too casual on her. The lack of hair styling and makeup also takes something away from her.

While a full denim look, in general, is not ideal for her, in the last image (right), she looks her best.

The tight fit of the jeans and absence of holes creates a sleek and sophisticated silhouette that matches her essence. Her hair and makeup are done, which also adds sophistication, as does the sharp heel.

Unconstructed

Zendaya Kibbe Body Type + Style Analysis

Zendaya is lost in these drapery, shapeless silhouettes. Her body is swimming in fabric. In the middle image, I feel like without the belt her dress would just slither to the floor. It is not safely structured to her body in the way that she needs.

While also not her best, the third look (right) is the best. The structured, tailored pant anchors this outfit so that the billowy top doesn’t overpower her. Also, the long sleek hair, pointed heels, and asymmetry provide the Dramatic elements she needs.

Romantic Lines

Zendaya Kibbe Body Type + Style Analysis

Zendaya looks amazing in these looks. I think she looks better as the dresses get more Soft Dramatic as opposed to just Romantic.

The middle image is pure Romantic, down to the styling of the hair. It’s beautiful, but I think the slinky fabric and lack of waist definition would look better on someone with a softer, curvier body (a Soft Natural).

I see the first (left) and third (right) dresses as being Soft Dramatic. They each have a long vertical line, waist definition, heavy fabric, and a boldness to them. In both, she looks stunning and more fierce than in the middle dress.

Overtly Sexy

Zendaya Kibbe Body Type + Style Analysis

Again, Zendaya looks incredible here. The rouched skin-tone leather has a clear visual weight to support her bone structure. The waist is defined and the jewelry and styling are elegant and bold.

I understand why this dress is nude and it looks amazing, but she would have also carried it off beautifully in a bold color. It would be more powerful.

Why Zendaya is NOT a Flamboyant Gamine

There has been talk on the internet streets of the possibility of Zendaya being a Flamboyant Gamine. Aside from her height disqualifying this possibility (she is 5'10 and Kibbe clearly states this is too tall for the Gamine types which are defined in part by a small stature), I thought it would be fun to look at her in these lines and see how they are clearly not her best.

Flamboyant Gamine

Zendaya Kibbe Body Type + Style Analysis

These Flamboyant Gamine outfits are not Zendaya’s best. They look childish and inelegant to her. I do however think that she has Gamine essence (in combination with others), which allows her to pull off some limited Gamine styling and especially hairstyles.

The first look (left) features a top that is cropped too high for Zendaya’s long vertical line. The overly ripped jeans are too playful for her sophisticated essence. This look cheapens her elegance.

The second look (middle) is perhaps the most Flamboyant Gamine. The short, sharp, boxy lines; the high neckline; the intense color blocking- is all too much for Zendaya. Again, she looks childish and the outfit looks busy.

The third look (right) is the best of these. The suit aligns with her Dramatic bone structure, but the Flamboyant Gamine elements: the racer stripes down the side of her leg; the black crop top; the color blocking all take away from this look for her.

Ingénue Essence

I think Zendaya has some Ingénue essence in her overall makeup, but it's a non-dominant essence. So, while some Ingénue styling can look beautiful on her, she cannot pull off entire looks centered around it. Let's explore this:

Zendaya Kibbe Body Type + Style Analysis

These are not flattering silhouettes for Zendaya. The girlish elements like the big petal sleeves and soft pink color (middle); the pleated, full A-line skirts (left, right); and even the playful print (left) all feel a little too cutesy for her.

She does have a cuteness to her, but her essence is more growth and sexy, and overly girlish styles look childish on her.

Zendaya Kibbe Body Type + Style Analysis

In these looks, the girlish styles have a long vertical, which is important for Zendaya. These looks are still boring and lack sophistication on her, but the length makes them better than the looks above.

She is lost in the big tulle and Cinderella gown, whose skirts are too flared and puffy for her narrow frame.

Zendaya Kibbe Body Type + Style Analysis

These are the best ‘girlish’ outfits on Zendaya. This is how she can play up her cuteness without being completely lost in it. Again, these are not her best looks, but she does look good.

The long vertical, waist definition and not-too-flared silhouettes help to anchor these looks to her structure.

The first look (left), is the best because it also has a fitted top, and for Zendaya, the more fitted the better.

The third look (right) is the least flattering because it’s the least fitted and the neckline is open in such a way that juxtaposes her sharp, thin frame to the soft, lightweight tulle and she looks dry and boney against it.

Dramatic Lines

Menswear

Zendaya Kibbe Body Type + Style Analysis

Zendaya was born to rock a fitted suit. She looks amazing in all these looks. The sharp tailoring, the sleek silhouette, the heavy fabric, and the long vertical lines all mimic her natural Dramatic structure and are perfectly harmonious with her.

The result is that she is easily her most expressive in a suit. It’s almost like the suit is her skin (because it blends with her so perfectly) and whatever she wants to communicate with her hair and makeup is amplified:

In the first look (left) she is fresh, girly, and cute. In the second look (middle), she is edgy and androgynous. In the third look (right), she is sexy and alluring.

The suit, or rather the long, sharp, sleek lines of such tailoring are Zendaya’s perfect canvas.

Not all suits are created equal:

Zendaya Kibbe Body Type + Style Analysis

In these looks, Zendaya deviates from the long, sleek vertical of the suits above- and they are not as flattering.

The fit of the pants in the first look (left) is too loose and the length is slightly cropped. This widens and shortens the silhouette, not by much, but it’s still enough to make a noticeable difference.

The jacket of the middle look is too oversized and the leggings are too playful. It’s a fun look (and themed wonderfully for a Spider-Man movie launch), but it’s not the greatest fit for her.

The third look needs pants. Lol. She looks incredible, of course, because her legs are gorgeous, but the jacket alone cuts off her vertical line. I think tailored pants would complete and elevate this look.

Overcoat Length Study

Zendaya Kibbe Body Type + Style Analysis

Zendaya is better suited by a long coat that honors her long vertical line.

The cropped jacket in the third look (right) is the most jarring and unflattering. It cuts off her vertical in a dramatic way because of the stark color contrast between the black jacket and the white shirt.

This entire outfit is a bit of a mess, but it would look so much better if her jacket was as long as or longer than the shirt. Then she could lose the hat and wear a more fitted shirt. As is, this look is confusing and I’m not sure whom it’s designed for.

In the middle, the short jacket works because the burgundy color matches that of her skirt. So taken together, the two pieces create a long vertical line.

The first image (left) is the best. The slim, long leather jacket is perfect for Zendaya. The thigh-high boots create an even longer vertical line and she looks great.

Overcoat Silhouette Study

Zendaya Kibbe Body Type + Style Analysis

Zendaya needs straight lines. In these outfits, the first look (left) is the least flattering because of the rounded and fullness of the coat. It makes her look wide and her body is lost under it.

In the images to the right, she looks great. The coats are straight and better fitted to her narrow frame.

The third look (right) is the best because of the long vertical created by the monochromatic color scheme of the entire look, but also the tailoring of the jacket. The lapels are thin and straight (unlike the middle image), and the fabric is heavyweight. The coat ever balances out the casual nature of the cargo-style pants with the knee pockets (?).

Special Exceptions:

Zendaya Kibbe Body Type + Style Analysis

I love these looks for demonstrating that ‘rules’ aren’t fixed and it’s all about the overall effect of any outfit.

The first look (left) is very wide, but it’s great on Zendaya because the coat is so heavy and structured that it fully supports her structure. The cut is also dramatically wide, so that drama works well with her Dramatic essence.

The middle coat is quite rounded, but it also looks good on her because of the styling. The wide waist belt and her boots create structure and tightness to this coat, making it work for her.

The last look (right) is monochromatic, narrow, and has a long vertical line. However, it’s her worst look because of the weightlessness of the fabric and the lack of structured tailoring. She looks like she's wearing pajamas.

Sexy Dramatic Lines

Zendaya Kibbe Body Type + Style Analysis

Zendaya is sexy (see the nude leather dress above for example), but this is not her brand of sexy. She looks like she’s trying to be a sexy badass.

Her essence is too gentle to pull this off. This sort of look requires the almost threatening sexiness and essence of a Dramatic like Bella Hadid.

Best Silhouettes

Sharp tailoring, very long or very short, feminine draping, narrow silhouette, medium to heavy fabrics.

Zendaya Kibbe Body Type + Style Analysis

Unflattering Silhouettes

Wide + Indistinct

Zendaya Kibbe Body Type + Style Analysis

These looks have structure, but the silhouettes are indistinct. I couldn’t draw them simply with straight lines.

This is especially true in the first (left) and middle images where the skirts over the pants obscure the silhouette. The middle look is also less structured than the others as the coat is less stiff.

The jacket of the last look (right) is structured, but the skirt and cardigan create a silhouette that is too wide and flowy (unconstructed) for Zendaya.

Zendaya Kibbe Body Type + Style Analysis

The first look (left) really does nothing for Zendaya.

While the long vertical line, waist definition, asymmetry, and even fabric weight are okay, the lack of structure and tailoring is overpoweringly bad because of how critically important those elements are for her. The pattern and colors of this dress are also not great.

The middle look is too lightweight and the flare of the skirt makes the silhouette too wide for Zendaya’s narrow, Dramatic frame.

The last look (right) could have been great- it was so close. It showcases her body beautifully, but from a design and body harmony point of view, it could be better:

Where the skirt sits cuts her vertical line in an unflattering way. It makes her proportions look off- her legs look short somehow. It also creates a gap between the top and skirt that is too long, which achieves more of a staccato effect than a monochromatic one.

The balloon at her waist is…fine. It doesn’t necessarily make her look wider, but it’s not doing much. Lastly, the crop top is too simple. It’s just a bandage across her boobs.

I have seen the full look with the cropped jacket and it made it worse for me. The little structure provided by the tailoring of the tiny jacket did very little to fix the issues I had and in fact, further highlighted the problematic horizontal breaks of this look.

What I would do:

  • Raise the skirt to her waist, adding length to her bottom and shortening the exposed middle section.

  • Redesign the crop top so it’s not bandage-looking. I think literally anything would look better.

  • Make the balloon black. Or a different color that would contrast well for a beautiful, dramatic finish.

I like this look, I get the vision. I just think the execution was weak.

Essence- Hair

Zendaya best hairstyles

Zendaya has so many different elements to her facial beauty, which allows her to play with and pull off many different hair looks. She looks great in all of these hairstyles.

Whether short or long, what they all have in common is a general cleanness and sleekness. This is Zendaya at her best.

Let’s see what happens as she loses sleekness:

Zendaya hairstyles

She is of course still gorgeous, but something is taken away when her hair isn’t perfectly polished. This is because of her Dramatic essence that requires clean, sophisticated finishes.

In similar hairstyles, I think she looks better in the more polished version (bottom) as compared to the more relaxed version (top). This is the clearest indication that Zendaya is not a Natural type.

But also, this:

Zendaya best hairstyles

That said, she really can beautifully pull off more beauty looks than most. It's not fair.

The cropped pixie cuts (top) play up her Dramatic edge and her Gamine essence. Note: Again, I think she looks the best in the left and right images which are ‘cleaner’. She looks great in the middle too, but the tousled look does take something away.

The bottom looks play up her delicacy. Her features almost blur out (because of the lack of any sharpness in the hair), but the effect is beautiful. She looks gentle.

Hair for Zendaya is a world of possibilities. She just has to know the effect she wants to create and be mindful of not going too far away from her primary essence.

Zendaya worst hairstyles

These are some of Zendaya’s least flattering hairstyles.

Zendaya needs styling. The undone ‘I woke up like this’ and wavy styles on the top left look like she forgot to do her hair.

The top two left looks are stiff and aging. The bobs are not sleek enough, and they have too much volume for her. The wet looks (both the long and short boob) look like she forgot to comb her hair and not ‘sexy’ as they would on a different face.

Essence- Makeup

Zendaya worst makeup

I think Zendaya looks her best in subtle but distinct (visible) makeup. She can handle intensity, especially in the eye, but the look must be sophisticated. She can handle color on the lip, but again it must be somewhat subdued to retain her elegance.

In the first look (left), the bright red lip is too much for her, and it’s all I see. Her eye makeup is also too subtle for this bold lip, it doesn't balance it out.

The middle and right looks both feature an intense eye and subtle lip. This works great for Zendaya and it doesn't look unbalanced (like an intense lip with a subtle eye does). She looks intense, fresh, and fun.

Zendaya best makeup

Zendaya needs visible makeup. In the very nude makeup (left) she looks too subdued. I want to put some lipstick on her or some eyeshadow AND lipstick. This look is too underwhelming on her and she almost disappears.

The look to the right is how she successfully pulls off the ‘no makeup’ look. Her eye is gently intense (compared to the looks above) and her lip color is a shade or two darker than her skin tone, which makes it visible.

The middle image shows how she can handle a bold and bright color (red lipstick), at the right intensity.

Best Looks:

I love this look. This is how Zendaya pulls off cute. The silhouette (particularly the skirt) is very ‘little girl’ but the fabric being leather is very mature and balances it out. The sharp shoes make for a sophisticated look and the statement earrings are beautiful. Her makeup is subtle but her smoky eye is perfect.

This is a fun look. This look has a lot of Flamboyant Natural elements: the oversized shoulders, deep V, and long lean skirt.

However, the waist definition, satin fabric, shoe embellishments, and earrings give it an ‘upscale diva’ feel that screams Soft Dramatic. I think this is why it looks great on Zendaya.

This is Zendaya’s brand of sexy. She looks cool, sexy, and powerful.

I mean, the girl can rock a suit. I love the drama of this one. The lines are long, sleek, and sharp and the waist definition is gorgeous, and again proves her to be a Soft Dramatic. This is perfect execution.

Fun. Cute. Yes.

I like this very much. It’s technically better suited for a Natural type on account of the textured and distressed knit fabric and the slouchy fit- but it works on her.

The stiff see-through bottom tube and edging provide the structure missing on the top. The white dress and shoes create a long vertical line and her hair and makeup are subtle, but sleek, sharp, and beautiful.

An honorable mention- because Zendaya is wearing a hot pink breastplate. This is so spectacular that it makes the bottom half excusable. In an ideal world, the skirt would be narrow and structured or it would be a tailored pant. But I’ll still take it. Happily. I love her hair.

Conclusion

If I had to type Zendaya, I would say she is a Soft Dramatic.

I'd love to know what you think. Please let me know if you came to the same conclusion or if you'd type Zendaya differently.
